Issue 7 #3 March 2000

Message from the Editor

This month's legislative update theme will focus on the SHRM 17th Annual Employment Law & Legislative Conference, which was held on March 6-8, 2000 in Washington D.C. I had the pleasure of attending the conference and would like to pass along my thoughts and information gathered to my fellow chapter members. I came away from the conference feeling refreshed with a renewed passion for the importance of grassroots involvement. Being around and talking with hundreds of other human resource professionals from across the country showed how we share in workplace concerns due to the legislative initiatives passed by Congress. Together, however, we can educate our congressional representatives and effect changes that will benefit today's workforce. SHRM gathered exceptional speakers, offered relevant concurrent sessions, networking opportunities, and of course, an opportunity to visit Capital Hill and our congressional representatives personally.

SHRM utilized this forum to announce a philosophical change for all SHRM members. Michael Lotito, SHRM Chairman of the Board, announced that through the Legislative Action Committee, legislative involvement would soon become a core competency of the human resource body of knowledge. All SHRM members will automatically become grassroots members and it will be considered an obligation of the profession to be involved to some degree with legislative action affecting the human resource professional. More specific details of this initiative will be rolled out at the SHRM Annual Conference. In the spirit of Lotito's announcement, I would encourage all chapter members to get involved at the grassroots level. For a grassroots application or further information, feel free to contact me via email or personally at our monthly meetings.
